The care guide

Loving Your Yorkie

Everything a new Yorkie parent needs to know to keep that tiny heart happy and that silky coat gorgeous.

Pearls of wisdom
🍽️

Nutrition

  • High-quality small-breed dog food with real meat as the first ingredient.
  • Portion control based on age, weight and activity. Yorkies are tiny — a little goes a long way.
  • Fresh water always available, especially after playtime.
🎀

Grooming

  • Brush that silky coat several times a week with a slicker brush and metal comb.
  • Bathe every few weeks with a gentle dog shampoo and dry thoroughly.
  • Professional grooming every 4–6 weeks — top-knots, bows and trims optional (but encouraged).
🐾

Exercise

  • About 30 minutes of activity daily — short walks and indoor play both count.
  • Interactive toys, fetch, and tug keep their brilliant little minds happy.
💖

Training & Socialization

  • Positive reinforcement only — treats, praise and cuddles work wonders.
  • Expose your Yorkie early to new people, sounds and safe pets to build confidence.
🏥

Health Care

  • Annual vet check-ups with vaccinations, dental care and wellness screenings.
  • Year-round flea, tick and heartworm prevention.
🦷

Dental Care

  • Brush teeth regularly with dog-specific toothpaste — Yorkies are prone to dental issues.
  • Dental chews and vet cleanings help keep those little smiles pearly.
🏡

Safety & Home

  • Puppy-proof by removing toxic plants, small objects and chemicals.
  • Always use a harness (not a collar) and leash — those trachea are delicate.
  • Give your Yorkie a cozy sleep spot away from drafts and foot traffic.

Frequently Asked

How big do Yorkies get?

Standard AKC Yorkshire Terriers typically mature between 4 and 7 pounds. Our pups are hand-raised on the smaller side and we share honest weight estimates for every puppy.

Are Yorkies hypoallergenic?

Yorkies have hair (not fur) and shed very little, which makes them a popular choice for allergy-sensitive homes. No dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic, but Yorkies come close.

Are Yorkies good with kids?

Yorkies are affectionate and adaptable, and do wonderfully with respectful older children. Because of their tiny size, supervision around toddlers is essential.

How long do Yorkies live?

With proper care, Yorkshire Terriers commonly live 13–16 years — one of the longest lifespans of any breed.

Do Yorkies shed a lot?

No — Yorkies are very low-shedding. Their long silky coat needs regular brushing and grooming to stay tangle-free.

Where is East Coast Yorkies located?

We're a family-owned AKC breeder in Waycross, Georgia. Virtual meet & greets are available for out-of-state families.
